Win Win Win’s 3-year-old filly Winplaceandshow made her stakes debut a winning one in Saturday’s $100,000 Azalea S. at Gulfstream Park.
After a rousing 7 ½-length allowance win on May 10, the dark bay stepped up in class for Saturday’s seven-furlong race. Breaking from post 1, she settled in third and made her way off the fence down the backstretch. Sorokin, who set a very fast half-mile of :45.21, began to tire from that effort midway on the turn, and Winplaceandshow took command outside the quarter pole.
Permian Basin, who was closing from well off the pace, loomed up on the outside of Winplaceandshow at the top of the stretch. Those two battled the rest of the way, with Winplaceandshow prevailing by a head.
“She’s a filly that we always thought had talent,” said trainer Joseph Orseno. “She’s got six starts, four wins, so the proof is right there in her record. We’ll have to see where we’re going to run her next but she’s a lovely Florida-bred to have, I’ll tell you that much.”
Winplaceandshow, owned by D. J. Stable LLC and Robert Cotran, has earned $163,980. The filly was bred in Florida by Brereton C. Jones and is one of Win Win Win’s 11 black type horses.
