King Cab was all alone in the stretch of the OBS Sophomore S. Sunday at Tampa Bay Downs, rolling to a 4 ¾-length victory to give the 3-year-old son of Noble Bird his first stakes win.

King Cab never really gave the competition any chance in the seven-furlong race, as he went right to the front out of the gate and was up by two lengths after the first quarter-mile. He opened up his lead on the turn with a very quick half-mile time of :44.74 and continued to pour it on in the stretch to win with ease in 1:22.25.

“This horse is very, very fast,” said Emisael Jaramillo, who rode King Cab for the first time. “Six furlongs, seven, he’s very strong. When I got to the 3/8-mile pole, I knew it was over. He’s so easy to ride.”

A winner of three of his five starts, King Cab has earned $141,940 for owners David Melin, Leon Ellman and Laurie Plesa. The chestnut was bred by Ocala Stud, Edward Wiest and William J. Terrill.

Noble Bird, who stands for $4,000 S&N, leads Florida’s 2022 Second-Crop sire list with a trio of stakes horses and also by winners and progeny earnings.
