Uncaptured became the first 2yo Canadian Horse of the Year in 28 years, joining an elite list that includes Deputy Minister

Uncaptured, the multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire and 2012 Canadian Horse of the Year as a juvenile, will stand stud at J. Michael O’Farrell, Jr.’s Ocala Stud in Florida. A stud fee will be announced at a later date.

“Uncaptured was his sire Lion Heart’s highest-priced yearling of his crop, and you can see why when you look at him,” said J. Michael O’Farrell, Jr. “He’s a tremendous physical with the talent and class to go with it. I believe breeders are going to like him, and we look forward to supporting him with plenty of our mares.”

Trained by Mark Casse, Uncaptured was one of North America’s best 2-year-olds of 2012, winning six of seven starts including five stakes victories. His stakes wins impressively came on both dirt and Polyrtrack, and ranged from 5 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles. Upcaptured capped off his 2-year-old campaign by sweeping Churchill Downs graded stakes for 2-year-olds, winning the Iroquois S. (G3) and Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2).

Prior to that pair of graded wins, Uncaptured broke his maiden in his debut at Woodbine and then proceeded to reel off wins in the $150,000 Clarendon S., $150,000 Vandal S., and $168,000 Swynford S. to begin his career 4-for-4. Owned by John Oxley, Uncaptured was named Canadian Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and Canadian Horse of the Year at the annual Sovereign Awards, becoming the first juvenile since 1984 to win Horse of the Year honors in Canada. He joined an elite list of 2-year-olds to win Horse of the Year that includes the likes of Deputy Minister. Uncaptured also recorded the fastest Beyer Speed Figure up to six furlongs by a 2-year-old in 2012, earning a 96 in his Clarendon win.

As a 3-year-old, Uncaptured was runner-up in the Spiral S. (G2) on the Kentucky Derby trail in his seasonal debut, before going on to become a classic winner in Canada with a win in the $500,000 Prince of Wales S. Earlier this year at four, he finished a half-length behind Palace Malice in the one-mile Gulfstream Park H. (G2), earning a 102 Beyer after they finished the mile in 1:33 4/5. Uncaptured recently retired with a record of 7-3-3 from 18 starts and career earnings of $1,072,366.

In 2011, Uncaptured was the highest-priced yearling by Lion Heart when he was purchased by Oxley and Casse for $290,000 at Keeneland. The dark bay colt hails from the multiple stakes-producing Arch mare Captivating.

“He is one of the classiest and most talented horses I’ve ever trained,” said Casse upon Uncaptured’s retirement last month.
