Spurious Precision ran off to a five length victory in the $200,000 Saratoga Special (G2) Sunday at the venerable upstate New York track, marking the second consecutive year a juvenile by High Cotton won a major 2-year-old stakes at Saratoga. Currency Swap won last year's Grade 1 Hopeful S. and has since gone on to take the Grade 2 Amsterdam S. this year.

Spurious Precision broke like a shot under Alan Garcia, rolling through a quarter mile in :21.35 seconds with a one-length lead. He kept the pace around the turn and opened up on the field turning for home. The winner increased his lead through the stretch and was eased up to finish the 6 1/2-furlongs in 1:16.53.

“He’s the real deal,” said trainer Rick Violette of Spurious Precision, who is owned by Seth Klarman and William Lawrence. “He put Alan in an impossible spot – he beat the latch. He broke so good, it’s not like you can take back at that point. There was serious pressure every jump of the way. Just watching horses come at him, and they did, he had a lot left. I don’t think we have a horse that has to be on the lead; circumstances kind of dictated it today.”

With a maiden win on July 21 also on his resume, Spurious Precision has earned $168,000 in two starts. Bred in Florida by Michael Chamberlain, Spurious Precision was a $105,000 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale purchase by his current owners. The auction price was the highest figure for a High Cotton 2-year-old to date this year.
