Commandant is Girvin's third First-Crop winner - Lauren King photo

Commandant overcame an extremely wide trip to win his first lifetime start on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The bay 2-year-old is Girvin’s third First-Crop winner, a trio led by Devious Dame, who won the $150,000 Astoria S. on June 9.

Commandant, in post 10 in the five-furlong race, was in the middle of the course for the entire trip. He was eighth through the first three furlongs and came seven-wide into the stretch. Full of momentum in the lane, he made up four lengths in the final furlong to win by a half-length in :59.14 on a fast track.

Commandant was a $300,000 purchase by his owner Champion Equine at the 2022 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale in April. He was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Edward Wiest and William Terrill.

Out of Alotofappeal, Commandant is a half-brother to two stakes winners and four additional stakes performers.
