Shane's Girlfriend rallies to take the Iowa Oaks (G3)

Shane's Girlfriend surged to the lead in deep stretch to win the $200,000 Iowa Oaks (G3) by 2 1/4-lengths on Thursday evening at Prairie Meadows.

The 3-year-old Adios Charlie filly, who won the Delta Princess (G3) last year, is now 3-0-1 in five starts and has earned $418,600. With 31 winners from 64 starters to date, Adios Charlie is Florida's leading sire of 2017 by winning percentage.

Shane's Girlfriend came out of her inside post very quickly, but midway around the first turn, Swing and Sway came in front of her, causing her jockey Kyle Frey to check sharply. The bay filly got into a good rhythm in third on the backstretch, mounted a three-wide rally on the final bend, then powered to the lead in mid-stretch to win going away in 1:43.94 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast main track (VIDEO).

"Around the first turn, it was a little shaky," Frey said. "We broke quick, which I knew we were going to. Luckily the outside horses pressed the pace and they went away from us, but I did have a little trouble in that first turn. After that she just relaxed completely.

"From there I knew, as long as she had the turn of foot from the last time I worked her, it was over."

Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, out of the Proud Citizen mare Western Tornado, Shane's Girlfriend was a $95,000 purchase by co-owner Dennis O'Neill out of the Ocala Breeders' Sales June 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sale in 2016.
