Averill Racing’s R Island Jewel broke her maiden and joined the ranks of stakes winners at the same time, dominating a compact field in the $150,000 Three Ring Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Sept. 5. The bay 2-year-old filly trounced her competition, winning as she pleased by 6 ¼ lengths, becoming the newest stakes winner for Awesome Slew.

Defeated just a neck in her only prior start, R Island Jewel emerged from a three-way battle on the front end with the lead on the far turn. She extended her advantage through the lane to graduate a clear winner.

Out of the Adios Charlie mare Hello Juliet, R Island Jewel is now an earner of $105,200. Bred in Florida by Midge Koontz, R Island Jewel was a $90,000 graduate at this year’s OBS March Sale where she was consigned by Ocala Stud and purchased by Stephen Skaggs, agent for Averill Racing.

Awesome Slew is also represented this year by Grade 1 winner R Disaster, winner of the Derby City Distaff (G1) at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day and the Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3); Langvad, winner of the Carry Back Stakes and runner-up in the $500,000 Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes at Charles Town; and Liberty Rings, victorious in the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies Stakes.
