Patternrecognition triumphs in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile - NYRA photo
Patternrecognition went gate to wire in the $750,000 Cigar Mile (G1) Dec. 1 at Aqueduct to become the first Grade 1 winner for Adios Charlie.
The brilliant 5-year-old has now won three straight races, including the Kelso H. (G2) on Sept. 22. Saturday's big payday upped his earnings to $812,325 for owners Klaravich Stables and William H. Lawrence. His record improved to 5-5-0 in 11 starts.
Patternrecognition fired right out of the gate under Jose Ortiz to take command from the outside post in the field of eight. He zipped through the half-mile in :45.68 with a one-length lead. Ortiz regularly glanced back to size up his competition and kept them at bay the rest of the trip, finishing nearly a length in front of True Timber in 1:34.98 on the fast track.
“This horse is a rare horse,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “He's got that speed and he can carry it. I'm very proud of the judgment Jose used today. I left it up to him and the fractions concerned me a touch, but this horse showed his heart.”
Pedigree notes from the TDN:
Patternrecognition is Adios Charlie's seventh black-type victor. The 5-year-old is a half-brother to MSW Florida Fuego and a full to stakes-winning juvenile of this year Lovesick. Their dam Almost A Valentine is a half-sister to Grade I winner Rigoletta, who is the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile hero and TDN Rising Star Battle of Midway. The 9- year-old mare produced colts by The Big Beast in both 2017 and 2018. She was bred back to Uncaptured earlier this term.
