Montbrook’s Fleet Valid on fire at Monmouth
Tuesday, September 8, 2009
Fleet Valid, a 6-year-old speedster by leading sire Montbrook, has been red-hot all summer at Monmouth Park. On Labor Day – Sept. 7th – he notched his fourth consecutive win there in the $75,000 Icecapade S. and officially laid his claim as the best sprinter on the Jersey Shore.

In the Icecapade, Fleet Valid overpowered his rivals again in the stretch, drawing a comfortable 2 ¾ lengths clear at the wire. The final time was another fast one – six furlongs in 1:09.25 – earning him a 100 Beyer Speed Figure. In his previous three starts at the meet, Fleet Valid ran six furlongs in 1:08 and change, which included a win in the $100,000 Teddy Drone S. last month.

Trained by Scott Volk, the chestnut horse now owns nine wins, six seconds and four thirds from 27 starts for owner Shillelagh Racing Stables. He has earned $349,516. Joseph and Helen Barbazon bred Fleet Valid in Florida from the Valid Appeal mare Di’s Song.

Montbrook has six stakes winners of nine stakes races in North America this year, and he holds a firm spot atop the Florida Leading Sires List with 2009 progeny earnings of more than $2.8 million.
