Montbrook: Calder Oaks winner becomes 7th SW of ‘09
Saturday, October 17, 2009
Chary, a 3-year-old filly by Florida’s Leading Sire Montbrook and graduate of Ocala Stud’s 2-year-olds-in-training sales program, became her sire’s seventh stakes winner of the year on Oct. 17th when she captured her stakes debut in the $75,000 Calder Oaks at the Miami-based racetrack.

Stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for the first time, Chary settled towards the back of the pack early before swinging out in the stretch and rallying strongly to win going away by 1 3/4 lengths on the line. She stopped the clock in 1:50.52 over a firm course.

The win was her first in a stakes race and third overall from 13 starts, including finishing second three times and third four times. The bay filly moved her earnings to $98,003 for trainer Pete Anderson and owner Cherry Valley Farm LLC, which acquired the filly last year at OBS for $130,000 from Ocala Stud.

Chary is out of the Boundary mare Lady Discreet, who is a half-sister to the brilliant Grade 1-winning millionaire Discreet Cat and this year’s top 2-year-old Discreetly Mine. Ocala Stud Farm, Joseph M. O'Farrell III & John David O'Farrell bred Chary in Florida.

Through Oct. 17th, Montbrook is again on top of the sire ranks in Florida with progeny earnings exceeding $3.2 million in 2009. His seven stakes winners have won a state-high 10 stakes wins this season.
