Lightnin Runner snags second stakes win with furious closing kick
Saturday, April 29, 2023

Battalion Runner’s Lightnin Runner earned her second stakes win in just four starts with a dramatic victory in the $75,000 Its Binn Too Long S. at Charles Town (WATCH RACE).

The 3-year-old filly was stumbled at the break and was several lengths in last early in the 4 ½-furlong dash. Great Spirit was setting a torrid pace of :21.53 for the first quarter-mile. Lightnin Runner didn’t hit her best stride until the final sixteenth, when she showed an incredible turn of foot to get to the wire a nose in front of the pacesetter.

Owned by George Nyren, Lightnin Runner has one three of four starts and earned $110,421. She was bred by Ronney and Nicole Brown.

Battalion Runner, who defeated eventual Preakness S. (G1) winner Cloud Computing in the Wood Memorial (G2), was a top-five First-Crop Florida sire in 2022 and is in a similar position on this year’s Second-Crop list. He stands this year for $2,500 S&N.
