Kantharos’ Mr. Jordan captures $100K Juvenile Sprint S. at Gulfstream

Kantharos’ exciting 2-year-old colt Mr. Jordan captured Saturday’s $100,000 Juvenile Sprint S. at Gulfstream Park West in his first stakes start. The Florida-bred colt is one of four stakes horses by his sire, who also was represented on Saturday’s Gulfstream card by the filly Savingtime, who was a close second in the $100,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint S.

Kantharos now has four stakes horses and is Florida’s leading freshman sire and is in the top 10 on the North American First-Crop Sire list.

Mr. Jordan, who was an easy maiden special weight Sept. 14 at Monmouth Park, was a deceptively easy winner in Saturday’s 6 ½-furlong contest. A few lengths off the pace early, Mr. Jordan mounted his own charge at the top of the stretch without any urging from jockey Paco Lopez. The gray colt rolled by his competition and drew away with ease, stopping the timer in 1:18.32.

“He won the first time going five and a half (furlongs) and now he was going six and a half,” said Lopez. “I told (trainer) Eddie (Plesa), I think I will win the race. I love the horse. The horse is still learning but I think the horse has a lot, a lot of talent,”

Asked about future plans, Plesa said: “I haven’t plotted it out. I will sit down after this race and come up with some kind of plan. Paco’s always had the impression that the horse will go around two turns. He said that before this horse ever ran. He said this horse will go all day. I think he will go around two turns, so there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Mr. Jordan picked up the $59,520 winner’s share of the purse for owners Laurie Plesa (the trainer’s wife), David Melin and Leon Ellman, who named the colt after one of his grandchildren.

Bred in Florida by Philip and Karen Matthews, Mr. Jordan is out of Ms. Skeetd, a half-sister to Hillsborough S. (G3) winner Rizzi Girl and the stakes winner Papi Chullo.
