Top-five First-Crop sire Girvin got his first stakes winner in eye-catching fashion on June 9 at Belmont Park when Devious Dame tallied a 5 ¼-length victory in the $150,000 Astoria S.

Girvin the first freshman sire of 2022 to account for a black type winner this year, and Devious Dame’s emphatic win plainly showed there is more to come from the dark bay filly.

Devious Dame was widest drawn in the field of five 2-year-old fillies and was three-wide around the turn as Alexis’s Storm was alone by about three lengths through the first three furlongs. Devious Dame found her best stride at the top of the stretch and easily collared and went by the pacesetter, drawing off in the final furlong to win eased up in 1:04.75 for the 5 ½-furlongs on a fast track.

“We came up here with the intention of winning but got to thinking that we’d rather let her settle a bit more than being adamant about just rushing her off her feet,” said winning trainer Norm Casse. “I do think she’s a two-turn filly and we need to teach her some of that patience now. Thankfully, it paid off.”

Devious Dame, who won at first asking on May 5 at Churchill Downs, is perfect in her two starts and has earned $118,060 for owner John Oxley. She was a $240,000 purchase at the OBS March 2-year-old sale.

Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Joe M. O’Farrell III, David O’Farrell et al, Devious Dame is out of The Shade Lady, an unraced half-sister to multiple stakes winner Courtesan and stakes winner Chary. The Shady Lady produced colts by Awesome Slew in each of the last two seasons.
