Adios Charlie, retires to Ocala Stud

Adios Charlie, winner of the Jerome S. (G2) and a leading three-year-old miler of 2011, has been retired from racing and will stand the immediate 2012 breeding season at J. Michael O'Farrell Jr.'s Ocala Stud Farm in Ocala, FL. His fee is $3,500 stands and nurses.

“Adios Charlie had real brilliance and could carry his speed a mile and beyond,” said O'Farrell. “He's a grand-looking individual by the right sire, and Florida breeders in particular should be familiar with his successful female family. We've had a lot of luck here with brilliant horses that could carry their speed, like Montbrook, Notebook and others.”

By the late top sire Indian Charlie, Adios Charlie broke his maiden impressively by 6 ¾ lengths at Gulfstream in his first start at three before winning the Jerome a month later in just his second start of the year. He defeated graded stakes winners Astrology and Justin Phillip, as well as Grade 1-placed Rattlesnake Bridge, in the one-mile event in New York.

In his next two starts, Adios Charlie was a game runner-up in two more of New York's top three-year-old events – the 1 1/8-mile Peter Pan S. (G2) and 1 1/16-mile Dwyer S. (G2). He retires with three wins and three seconds from seven starts with earnings of $251,090.

A $400,000 OBS March two-year-old in training purchase, Adios Charlie hails from one of Florida's most active families. His dam, Teak Totem, was a stakes winner and is a full sister to current multiple Grade 1 winner Teaks North, and half to other stakes winners such as multiple graded stakes winner Wooden Phone.
