First winner for Adios Charlie
Friday, September 4, 2015
Ocala Stud’s freshman sire Adios Charlie, a Grade 2-winning son of Indian Charlie, was represented by his first winner on Thursday when 2-year-old filly R Sweet Exchange broke her maiden first-time out by a widening 3 ½ lengths at Gulfstream Park.

Taking the lead not long after the break, R Sweet Exchange was in front by two lengths after a quarter mile and never let any of her challengers mount a serious threat, running six furlongs in 1:12.41 over a fast local main track. Trained by Sally Mitchelhill, the bay filly earned $20,800 for the win for owners Averill Racing LLC.

R Sweet Exchange was bred in Florida by Carl and Martha Johnson, and is the first foal out of the Exchange Rate mare Sweet Rate, whose dam Sweetheavenlycross is a sister to Grade 3 winner and former Florida sire Sweetsouthernsaint.

A $400,000 2-year-old in training purchase at OBS, Adios Charlie impressively broke his maiden by 6 ¾ lengths at Gulfstream before winning the one-mile Jerome S. (G2) at Belmont over several graded stakes winners in his next start. He was also runner-up in the Peter Pan S. (G2) and Dwyer S. (G2) before retiring with earnings of $251,090.

Entering stud in 2013, Adios Charlie stands at Ocala Stud where his 2015 fee was $3,000. His 2-year-olds have been particularly well-received at the sales, with a filly bringing $675,000 and a colt selling for $600,000 at the OBS March Sale, as well as a colt bringing $420,000 at the OBS April Sale.
