John Oxley’s Devious Dame became the first starter and first winner for Ocala Stud’s Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner Girvin, running her rivals off their feet with a stylish 5 ½-length score in a $120,000 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs on Thursday, May 5.

Ridden by Joe Talamo for trainer Norm Casse, Devious Dame dueled with Empire of My Own in the early stages. After putting away that rival inside the eighth-pole, she kicked clear of the field and scored well clear in the end, stopping the clock in :58.09 for five furlongs. Out of the unraced Quality Road mare The Shady Lady, Devious Dame hails from the female family of Grade 1 winners Pretty Discreet, Discreet Cat, and Discreetly Mine.

Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud, Joseph O’Farrell III, and David O’Farrell, et al, Devious Dame sold for $240,000 at this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s March Sale where One Up Bloodstock signed for the precocious filly out of Ocala Stud’s consignment after she breezed an eye-catching quarter mile in :20 4/5 at that sale’s under tack preview.

Winner of the 2017 Haskell, Girvin stands at Ocala Stud for the partnership of Brad and Misty Grady’s Grand Oaks Farm and Kentucky-based Airdrie Stud. In addition to the Haskell, Girvin also won the Risen Star Stakes (G2) and the Louisiana Derby (G2) and went postward in the 2017 Kentucky Derby (G1) as the top point earner on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. All told, Girvin retired with a record of 10-4-3-0, having won or placed in five of seven Graded stakes starts and he amassed earnings of $1,624,392.

A son of Tale of Ekati, Girvin is produced from the Malibu Moon mare Catch the Moon and is a half-brother to multiple Graded stakes winner Midnight Bourbon and to Iroquois Stakes (G3) winner Cocked and Loaded. He was bred in Kentucky by Bob Austin and John Witte.
