Big Drama leaves little doubt in BC Sprint victory

Big Drama proved he is the best sprinter in the land with a gate-to-wire victory in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old Montbrook colt never let any of his 11 foes get within a length of him at any point, ultimately winning by 1 1/2-lengths and covering the six furlongs 1:09.05. Big Drama broke from the rail and quickly went to the front, getting up by 1 1/2-lengths after a quarter mile. The field started to come to him entering the stretch, but the dark bay/brown Florida-bred would have none of it, opening back up by a couple lengths and leaving little doubt as to who the winner would be. A blanket photo for second wound up with longshot Hamazing Destiny in second, with Smiling Tiger a neck back in third.

“He did everything on his own to the stretch,” winning jockey Eibar Coa said. “When the rest started coming to me, he just pushed harder and won.”

Trainer David Fawkes, who was saddling his first Breeders' Cup starter, credited the South Florida surface at Calder with the colt's dominant performance. "I'll be honest with you; I think the foundation comes from Calder," Fawkes said. "You saw Stanley Gold's filly (BC Juvenile Fillies winner Awesome Feather); that surface, it's a safe, but a tiring, track. It gets horses ultra fit. You see a lot of horses come out of there and go on to win all kinds of races. That's a great track to get a foundation on a horse."

Big Drama is owned by his breeder, Harold Queen.

Montbrook is Florida's leading sire of the past two years and the number one in terms of career stakes winners. Big Drama is the all-time leading earner for his sire, with $2,639,560 in his 16 career outings. He is a perfect 4-for-4 at the six furlong distance.

Big Drama has been his usual consistent self this season. After taking the first half of the year off, he won the Ponche H. and Smile Sprint H. (G2), both at Calder. He then was shipped to Saratoga for a pair of Grade 1's, the Vanderbilt H. and Forego; he was second with tough racing luck in both races.
