Big Drama comes back huge in Ponche Handicap
Tuesday, June 15, 2010
Big Drama didn't look like he's missed a beat with an easy score in the six furlong Ponce H., his 2010 debut, at Calder on June 12. The 4-year-old colt by Montbrook had been away from the races since last August.

Ocala Stud's Montbrook is a perennial Florida top-10 sire, leading the list on four occasions. He stands in fifth place for 2010.

In the Ponche, Big Drama stalked a fast pace set by Rusty Charlie, eagerly took the lead approaching the stretch, then edged away to a commanding margin, and never was seriously threatened in the final furlong. The final time was 1:10.74 over the fast track.

Big Drama has been off the board only twice in 12 lifetime starts, rolling up a 7-2-1 record and earning $1,257,750 for owner/breeder Harold Queen.

The Ponce was one of several stakes on the Summit of Speed preview card. The Summit of Speed, Calder's annual showcase for sprinters, is scheduled to be run on July 10. Big Drama is being pointed to the Grade 2 Smile that day, according to trainer David Fawkes in his comments to the Daily Racing Form afterwards. "I thought that was pretty impressive all in all," said Fawkes. "He (jockey Luis Saez) just hand rode him. It was a great tightener for the Smile."
