Big breakthrough for Calculator in $100,000 Sham S. (G3)

In Summation’s leading 3-year-old colt Calculator rocketed through the Santa Anita Park stretch en route to a 4 ¼-length victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Sham S. (G3). Already twice Grade 1-placed, Calculator earned 10 points for this year’s Kentucky Derby (G1).

After finishing second behind highly regarded American Pharoah in the Grade 1 FrontRunner S. on Sept. 27 and the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 3, Calculator got a short rest before beginning the road to the 2015 Triple Crown.

Off those two finishes, the bettors made the gray/roan sophomore the 3-5 favorite, and he didn’t disappoint. Placed on the outside in fifth through the first five furlongs, Elvis Trujillo send Calculator three wide to swoop to the lead with a quarter mile to go, cruising through the stretch unopposed.

The final time of 1:34.88 was just a little more than a second off the track record.

“I didn’t expect him to be this good,” said winning trainer Peter Miller. “I was hoping he was good enough to win at 90 percent (fitness). The water gets deeper from here on out, so we’re going to have to step up our game and move forward off of this one. We’ll see how the horse comes out, but I wouldn’t rule out coming back in a month in the Lewis (Grade 2, 1 1/16 miles Robert B. Lewis on Feb. 7). The timing of it is good and when my horses are good, I like to run them.”

Calculator, owned by Richard Pell, has hit the board in four of five starts and has now earned $193,500. Pell bought his star colt from the Ocala Stud consignment at the 2014 OBS Spring 2-year-old sale. Bred by Ocala Stud, Calculator is out of the unraced Alphabet Soup mare Back to Basics, who has three stakes-winning siblings.
