X Y Jet runs stakes win streak to three

X Y Jet set scorching early fractions and held off a late challenge to win the $100,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint S. (G3) by 1 ¼-lengths on Saturday. The 4-year-old by Kantharos has won three straight stakes races, all at Gulfstream. He has won his last five outings, dating back to last September, by a combined margin of nearly 20 lengths.

After what appeared to be a bit of a stumble at the break, X Y Jet sped to the lead soon after. The gray speedster rolled through a quarter mile in :21.84 and the half in a scorching :43.92. Set down for the stretch drive, X Y Jet dug in late to comfortably hold off the closer Candip, getting the 6 ½-furlongs in 1:15.95 on a fast track.

"After he stumbled, he gathered himself and he made the lead," said Emisael Jaramillo, who has been aboard for X Y Jet’s last four wins. "They put pressure on him, but when they looked him in the eye, he got in the bridle. When he turned for home, he got in a different gear. In the lane, it looked like he was waiting on horses, but he has so much class, when I called on him, he just drew away again."

Gelfenstein Farm sold a majority interest in X Y Jet to Rockingham Ranch following his win in last month’s Sunshine Millions Sprint, with the new owner’s intent to ship the horse to Dubai for the Golden Shaheen (G1) on March 26.

"I'm going to keep him happy now," trainer Jorge Navarro said afterward. "In a way, the :43 (half mile), I kind of loved it because I'm not planning to do anything with him right now. I'm going to keep him happy, that's it. I'm going to go (to Dubai) and go on a vacation."

X Y Jet is now 6-5-1 in 14 starts and has banked $365,653. He was bred in Florida by Didier Plasencia.
