Shivaree wins battle to take Buffalo Man S.

Awesome of Course got his latest stakes winner Saturday at Gulfstream Park when the 2-year-old colt Shivaree bested Went West by a neck in the $75,000 Buffalo Man S.

It was the first stakes win for Fred Brie's Jacks or Better Farm homebred, who has tasted plenty of success with Shivaree's dam Garter Belt. Shivaree is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Garter and Tie and also a full brother to the two-time stakes winner Twotwentyfive A, while her two remaining foals are both stakes-placed.

Shivaree was coming off a nine-length maiden special weight win just a week ago. Breaking from post 2 in the six-furlong Buffalo Man, he was never worse than second at any point. He had the lead at the top of the stretch, but Went West was up as much as a half-length in mid-stretch before Shivaree battled back to get to the wire first in a swift 1:09.42 on a fast track.

“When I saw him make the lead, it was – was he good enough from there? When the other horse collared him and stuck his neck in front of him, it was – he may be second best,” trainer Ralph Nicks said. “But Fred teaches them to run. They’re trained to run; they’re trained to be tough; they don’t quit. Kudos to Fred on his program.”

With the win, Shivaree upped his earnings to $99,120.
