R Girls a Charmer kicked off her 3-year-old stakes campaign with an authoritative four-length victory in Saturday’s $100,000 Gasparilla S. at Tampa Bay Downs. The daughter of In Summation started the year in similar style, winning a six-furlong maiden special weight contest by nearly seven lengths on Jan. 2 at Gulfstream Park.

Saturday’s seven furlong contest was nearly identical to her maiden win. Taking charge at the outset, the chestnut speedster set a solid pace and drew off in the stretch to get the distance in 1:25.61 (VIDEO).

“She made the lead pretty easy, and I had a lot of horse in the stretch,” winning rider Antonio Gallardo said. “I think if someone else had put pressure on her, she would have taken off again. I like her a lot.”

Trained by Mark Casse for Gary Barber, R Girls a Charmer is now 2-1-0 in three starts and has banked $101,000. She was bred in Florida by Ocala Stud and sold by the farm at the 2015 OBS Spring 2-year-olds sale.

In Summation, who was Florida’s leading Third-Crop Sire of 2015 with eight black type horses, including Grade 3 winner Calculator, stands this year at Ocala Stud for $2,500 live foal.
