Girvin colts triumph in maiden special weights at Del Mar and Gulfstream
Saturday, August 6, 2022

Top-10 First-Crop sire Girvin added a pair of maiden special weight winners on Saturday to bring his total to seven, a list that includes the stakes-winning filly Devious Dame.

Apocalypso kicked off the day’s action for his sire with a gritty neck victory at Gulfstream Park. Making his first career start at 6 ½-panels, the bay colt broke with the leaders before settling back a bit off the pace. He rallied and took the lead rather easily with three furlongs to go, then had to dig deep to repel the charge of Fifty One Fifty in the final furlong.

Apocalypso, bred by Ocala Stud, was consigned and sold for $90,000 at the OBS March 2-year-old sale. He is owned by Magic Cap Stables.

On the west coast at Del Mar, the cleverly named Mister Iceman won a five-furlong race by the same margin as Apocalypso. The bay colt was in an early tussle for the lead, then held off the late-closing Hawker for the win.

Mister Iceman is owned by Gary Barber and sold for $80,000 at the OBS Spring 2-year-old sale. He was bred by Ponder Hill, Inc.
