Formal Summation annexes $75,000 Laurel Futurity

Florida’s leading Third-Crop sire In Summation got his fifth stakes horse of the year on Saturday as Formal Summation scored a front-running, 2 ¾-length victory in the $75,000 Laurel Futurity.

Formal Summation, who has won two of his three lifetime starts, responded perfectly on Saturday following an effort in last month’s Tyro Stakes at Monmouth that left his connections baffled.

“We don't know what happened that last race,” trainer Kathleen O’Connell said. “He galloped in Miami in his first race (maiden victory), and he has always trained very well. Monmouth has a very sharp first turn so maybe that was it.”

Laurel’s sloppy main track posed no problems as Formal Summation battled early with Louie the Laser before putting him away at the half-mile marker, then coming home strongly to get the 5 ½-furlongs in 1:06.21 over the off going.

“I am not sure what is next for him,” O’Connell said. “I don't expect any problems with him going further. He does everything very well.”

The winner, who banked $45,000 for the victory, is owned by her breeder Lynne Martin-Boutte.
