A second-crop 2-year-old by Awesome Slew fetched $700,000 and was the session-topping colt and second-highest priced juvenile during the first day of Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic May Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training in Maryland on Monday, May 22.

Bred in Florida by John Penn, the colt, who breezed in :10 flat at the sale’s under tack preview, sold to the partnership of Maverick Racing/Siena Farm/CMNWLTH and was consigned by Tom McCrocklin, agent. The bay colt, a half-brother to a pair of stakes-placed runners in Reckling and Campy Cash, is produced from the winning Distorted Humor mare Cash Reserve, a half-sister to stakes winners Sam Lord’s Castle and Golden Locket out of Alcibiades Stakes (G2) winner Private Treasure.

The colt sold previously for $150,000 at last year’s OBS October Yearling Sale where he was consigned by Sue Vacek, agent, and bought by Champion Equine LLC.

Awesome Slew was last year’s No. 1 First-Crop Sire in Florida, and he is currently the second-ranked Second-Crop Sire in Florida this year. Among his racetrack highlights in 2022 was Awesome Strong and Tigre finishing 1-2 in the $400,000 FTBOA Florida Sire In Reality Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
