Undefeated The Big Beast filly rolls again at Gulfstream Park
Sunday, April 5, 2020
Up in Smoke turned in another stylish performance in an April 5 allowance at Gulfstream Park, coming from well off the pace once again to score by four lengths and run her record to a perfect three-for-three.

The 3-year-old filly, who cost $230,000 as a 2-year-old, has won her three starts by a combined 12 lengths, and has big plans on the horizon according to her connections.

Despite facing older fillies early in the year, Up in Smoke looked like a seasoned veteran as she flew past the competition in the stretch after making a bold five-wide move into the lane to win going away.

“It's hard to map out a plan when we don't know what's going to happen,” said bloodstock agent Jake Ballis, who orchestrated the filly's purchase with co-owner Black Type Thoroughbreds. “We do want to stretch her out. We don't think she is a true sprinter. Her running style makes me think she's going to stretch out. So ideally, we are going to go stakes races now from here on out. Hopefully, if Saratoga runs, and if she keeps doing well, the goal would be to try and run in the Test S. (G1).”

Bred in Florida by John and Carole Rio, the winner's dam Therese is a half-sister to GI Champagne winner Proud Accolade.

Up in Smoke is just one of 11 winners to date this year for The Big Beast, whose first crop are 3-year-olds. His first stakes winner came on March 21, when Hear My Prayer took the Melody of Colors S. at Gulfstream.

After breeding his largest book of mares, at 113, in 2019, The Big Beast is standing this year at Ocala Stud for $6,000 live foal.
