K. Johnston Racing, Michael and Jules Iavarone and Hopeless Stables’ precocious juvenile Sum of Success kept his perfect record intact with a dominant performance in winning the $150,000 Express Tour Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Sept. 5. The 2-year-old son of Win Win Win is now three-for-three with two stakes victories. He won the $100,000 In Summation Stakes in his previous outing on Aug. 8. His three wins have come by a combined 24 ¼ lengths.

With regular rider Jonathan Ocasio in the irons for trainer Bobby Dibona, Sum of Success set a face pace in the seven-furlong Express Tour while in-hand for Ocasio. The bay colt widened his advantage to mid-stretch and was geared down late, scoring under wraps by 5 ¼ lengths at the wire.

“This one might be the best I ever trainer,” Dibona said of his charge. “Picture perfect. What can I say? He’s run three races and he’s won by [open lengths] and never been asked to do anything yet.”

Sent off as the odds-on favorite for a third straight time, Sum of Success is produced from the winning In Summation mare All Summed Up. Bred in Florida by Oakleaf Farm in Ocala, Sum of Success was a $165,000 graduate of this year’s OBS Spring Sale where he was consigned by Wavertree Stables and bought by Dibona.

“[I haven’t asked] for everything, just 75-80 percent. I think he can do more than he’s doing right now. He still has a lot to learn. He can go mile, go seven, six, five, 5 ½ [furlongs]. He can do everything good,” Ocasio said. “It feels great. I know I have a good horse with me, and I just have to ride him straight and he’ll do everything else.”

Dibona added of Ocasio’s ride in the Express Tour, “You know what I tell him? Good luck.” He knows the horse. He rode him like a gem.”

Sum of Success is being pointed to the $150,000 Three Rules Stakes for Florida-breds on Oct. 3.

 “He’s doing everything I’m asking. I’m happy with the route that I chose. We’re just going to stay a little patient and take everything as it comes along,” Dibona said. “He’s a good boy. If you’re a horse person and you’re out looking for horses and scouting, you know how hard it is to come up with a horse. We’ve been at this for a long time and come a long way. We’re very excited.”
