On the heels of his season-ending win in the Grade 1 Asahi Hai Futurity S., Asia Express was named Japan's Champion 2-year-old colt of 2013.

The chestnut colt, by Henny Hughes out of the Running Stag multiple stakes winning mare Running Bobcats, was bred by Ocala Stud and sold at the Ocala Breeders' Sale Co. March 2-year-olds in training sale, where he was purchased by Narvick International for $230,000.

After winning his first two starts on dirt by a combined 12 lengths, Asia Express took to the turf equally well in the Dec. 15 Asahihai Futurity, winning by 1 1/4-lengths under Ryan Moore.

“He’s a special horse; not many can do that on grass. He may prove even better than on dirt,” said Moore at the time. “He’s a horse who hasn’t hit the bottom yet and there’s more to come so it’ll be interesting to see how much he improves.”
