Cupids Messenger delivered a strong stretch run to break her maiden by a widening three lengths Sunday at Calder. The 2-year-old filly is the fifth winner by freshman sire Gottcha Gold, who is third on Florida's first-crop sire list.

Going a mile in the off-the-turf event, Cupids Messenger was fifth after a half-mile, but only a little more than two lengths off the lead. Deftly handled by Juan Leyva, who had to avoid a slowing Catira Valen on the turn, the eventual winner hit the front in mid-stretch and pulled away to win with something in reserve.

Cupids Messenger was bred in Florida by Robert Papania and is owned by Pinnacle Racing Stables. The bay filly is out of the stakes placed mare Final Assault, who racked up $216,121 in earnings.
