Catherinethegreat rolls in Schuylerville S. (G3)

Uncaptured vaulted to the top of the 2018 First-Crop Sire list when his 2-year-old daughter Catherinethegreat cruised to a 4 1/4-length victory in the $150,000 Schuylerville S. (G3) on opening day of the 2018 Saratoga meet.

Trained by Mark Casse for John Oxley, Catherinethegreat scored a dazzling 10 1/4-length maiden special weight win on June 23 at Gulfstream Park. Breaking from the inside post in the field of 10 2-year-old fillies contesting the six-furlong Schuylerville.

Catherinethegreat went to the front very soon after the break, setting a blistering pace of :21.78 for the first quarter-mile and :44.64 for the half. Up a length at the top of the stretch, the gray filly poured it on in the stretch, drawing off with authority to stop the timer in 1:09.88 on the fast main track.

“Unfortunately, with the break we didn’t have a whole lot of choice but to go,” Casse said. “I talked to Jose (jockey Jose Ortiz) about her this morning and I said if she breaks, you might have to go. It didn’t hurt our feeling that [Nonna Madeline] got away a little slow because she most likely would of hooked up with her early. I was nervous when I first saw the fractions and, after, I thought she’s a pretty good horse.”

Catherinethegreat has now won two of her three starts, with one second, and upped her earnings to $136,300. She was bred in Florida by Wendy Christ and Kathie Haines and sold to Oxley for $170,000 at the 2017 OBS Yearling sale last October.

Besides Catherinethegreat, Uncaptured is the sire of three additional maiden special weight winners, all coming at Gulfstream Park.
